Inner Smile
Technique: Explanation and Routine
The Inner Smile
technique is a foundational Taoist practice that taps into the power of smiling
to heal and calm the body from the inside out. Taoists believe that smiling has
an incredible ability to generate positive energy, and by turning that smile inward,
it can deeply transform the body and mind.
The practice begins by
learning to smile into your eyes, which opens the doorway to focusing that
smiling energy within. From there, the smile is directed inward toward the
organs, the digestive system, the brain, spine, and eventually the entire body.
The Inner Smile works to calm and focus the mind, while its healing potential
helps to release trapped negative energy and replace it with happy, positive
energy.
Though it may sound
unconventional, the logic behind the Inner Smile is rooted in Taoist wisdom. By
smiling into the body, we not only calm our internal systems but also learn to
love ourselves—genuinely and compassionately—from the inside out. This is not a
form of self-obsession or ego worship, but rather a practice of self-compassion
and healing.
With practice, the
Inner Smile radiates from within, transforming your energy. People around you
will sense your inner calm and positivity, reacting to your "smiling
energy." A true smile that emerges from the depths of your being has the
power to work wonders, bringing light and positivity not only to yourself but
also to those around you.
Each of the five major
organs in the body corresponds to one of the Five Elements in Taoist philosophy
(Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water), and by smiling into these organs, we begin
the process of balancing these elements within. This practice directly influences
our emotional state, as the balance of the Five Elements in our body governs
our emotions. By calming the organs through smiling, negative emotions are
gradually converted into positive emotions, allowing us to maintain emotional
equilibrium.
This practice goes
beyond the Western idea that emotions are solely controlled by the brain.
Taoists have long recognized that the organs play a crucial role in our
emotional well-being. Learning to connect with and care for our internal organs
through the Inner Smile cultivates a healthier, more balanced emotional state.
Inner Smile Routine
1. Prepare
Yourself:
Find a comfortable place to sit quietly where you won’t be disturbed. Sit with
your spine straight, shoulders relaxed, and eyes gently closed. Take a few deep
breaths, grounding yourself in the present moment.
2. Smile into Your
Eyes:
Visualize a warm, gentle smile forming in your eyes. Without forcing it, allow
this smile to naturally blossom in your face, especially around the eyes. Feel
how the energy of this smile begins to fill your eyes and soften the muscles
around them. Let the smile be genuine and kind.
3. Guide the Smile
Inward:
Now, imagine that this smiling energy flows from your eyes down into your
heart. Allow the smile to fill your heart, expanding with warmth and love. Feel
gratitude for your heart, which works tirelessly to keep you alive.
4. Smile into Your
Organs:
- Lungs (Metal Element): Smile down into your lungs, filling them
with light and warmth. Feel them expand as you thank them for every breath
you take.
- Liver (Wood Element): Next, direct the smile into your liver.
Imagine it becoming lighter and more relaxed as it releases anger and
stress. Let it be filled with the smile’s healing energy.
- Spleen & Stomach (Earth Element): Smile into your digestive system,
particularly your spleen and stomach. Send the smiling energy to ease
tension and promote healthy digestion, replacing worry with calm.
- Kidneys (Water Element): Bring the smile down into your kidneys,
releasing fear and restoring a sense of peace and security. Feel the
kidneys energize with positivity.
- Heart (Fire Element): Smile once again into your heart. Feel it
open and soften as it releases impatience and frustration, and fills with
compassion and joy.
5. Smile into the
Brain and Spine:
Guide the smiling energy up your spine and into your brain. Imagine it
illuminating your mind, melting away any tension or negative thoughts. Let the
brain relax and become clear, calm, and focused.
6. Smile into Your
Whole Body:
Finally, let the smile radiate throughout your entire body. Visualize every
cell being touched by the light of the smile, filling you with positive energy
from head to toe. Your whole body is now bathed in a gentle, healing smile.
7. Finish with
Gratitude:
After smiling into each part of your body, rest for a moment and feel the sense
of peace and balance. End the practice by thanking your organs for keeping you
alive and healthy.
8. Daily
Integration:
You can integrate this practice into your daily routine. In the morning, upon
waking, stand in front of a mirror, look into your eyes, and smile. Ask
yourself: “What can I do today to make you happy?” and listen for an answer.
Throughout the day, whenever you see your reflection, smile into your eyes and
repeat this inquiry, cultivating a deep and lasting connection with your inner
self.
With regular practice,
the Inner Smile technique will help you balance the Five Elements within your
body, enhance your emotional well-being, and create a sense of inner harmony
and peace. You’ll begin to radiate this positivity outward, bringing more light
into your life and the lives of those around you.
